General information

Headteacher: Ted Haslam, appointed in September 1989.

Staff: 15 (men 5, women 10).

Background: Founded in 1914, the preparatory school is situated next door to the senior school, giving pupils the chance to take advantage of facilities such as a swimming pool, sports hall and chapel. Although the prep school has its own grounds, the school remains 'firmly part of the Barney Family whilst retaining its own character and traditions'. The school offers a well-structured curriculum with a wide scope for practical learning. Extra-curricular activities include music, drama and an extensive sports programme. Children are encouraged to take part in team and individual games, ranging from netball to swimming and athletics. Pupils aged seven years and above are required to sit entrance examinations in English and maths. Any previous school reports may be considered. To encourage and enable children to reach their full potential within a secure and happy learning environment. Above all, the school aims to provide a 'friendly and supportive' place, with 'each teacher having a supportive role'.

Approach to discipline: 'A well-balanced code of conduct helps to foster a sensibly disciplined working environment and positive relationships. The school wishes to impart respect and consideration for oneself and for others. Parents will be kept closely informed of any discipline problems. The children are made clearly aware of the standards that the school expects.'

Uniform: Boys: navy blazer, grey shorts or trousers, white shirt, tie and school sweater. Girls: navy blazer, grey skirts, white blouse, tie and school sweater..

Inspection: March 2005: ?Barnard Castle Preparatory School is an effective school which successfully achieves its aims. It provides a caring environment, especially in the boarding house, where pupils feel happy and secure. The highly committed teaching and support staff promote good standards of learning and behaviour which lead to good attainment and progress in relation to the abilities of the pupils. The strength of the school owes much to the exceptional vision, dedication and drive within the senior management team. Neither the library nor facilities for information and communication technology are adequate for the size of the school.?.
