Background: Barnard Castle School is situated on the outskirts of the town of Barnard Castle, next door to the Bowes Museum, which is well signposted throughout the town and surrounding area.Music is a thriving part of the school. Cadets can join in the summer term of their Year 9 and enjoy an introduction to small bore target shooting, learn how to build an improvised shelter, cook on an open fire, have an intro to simple drill and put all into practice during an overnight self-sufficiency exercise in the wilds of Catterick ranges.Barnard Castle enjoys an enviable record in inter-school competition, and pupils regularly achieve county and national honours in their chosen sport. There is a wide variety of other sports including hockey, netball, rounder, cricket, tennis, soccer, squash, athletics, fencing, basketball and cross country. The facilities include extensive playing fields, tennis courts, a sports hall, indoor heated swimming pool and a floodlit all weather sports pitch. .
