General information

Headteacher: R N Baird, appointed in September 2000.

Staff: 13 (men 4, women 9).

Background: Bow School is an independent day school for boys aged 3 to 13. Founded in 1885, the school moved to its present site in 1888 and formally became the preparatory school for Durham School in 1976. Bow is set in its own grounds on the edge of Durham City overlooking the world-famous Cathedral.

Approach to discipline: 'High standards of behaviour are expected.'.

Uniform: Grey trousers and green blazer..

Inspection: May 2005: 'Bow is a happy school in which pupils? good academic standards and achievements in a range of activities are celebrated and contribute effectively to their good personal development. The sound management and leadership of the school ensure a suitable quality of education is provided and demonstrate an exciting vision for the future of the school. Good pastoral care and productive relationships between home and school result in very well behaved, hard working, polite and courteous pupils. Aspects of management require development, including short and medium term development planning and the monitoring of teaching and report writing by subject coordinators.'
