General information
Headteacher: Gillian Settle, appointed in September 2003.
Staff: 17 (men 2, women 15).
Background: Durham High School for girls was founded in 1884 by Church Schools Company; in 1910, local governing body took over management of school; in 1968, school opened on present site. Purpose-built nursery opened in September 1997; new infant building opened in September 2000. Specialist teaching in music, French, physical education, and design and technology; 20 per cent of year five pupils receive individual instrumental lessons. Sports offered include gymnastics, dance, karate, athletics and football. Durham High School for girls junior house is a caring, supportive environment in which it respect all and consider others view and needs.
Approach to discipline: Positive behaviour management. 'Within a Christian framework, children are taught to respect one another.'
Uniform: Bottle-green tunic/skirt, sweatshirt with crest, gold polo shirt, white shirt, tie, green blazer, green socks/tights, black shoes. 'All pupils wear correct uniform.'
Special needs: Specialist support for dyslexic children; individual lessons and group support.
Inspection: March 2004: ?Durham High School thoroughly deserves its reputation amongst parents and the local community for providing a good education and very good pastoral care, which contribute to the generally high standards attained by its pupils in academic, sporting and creative endeavours. Under the strong leadership of the head, the school is making good progress.?.
