General information

Headteacher: Ann Templeman, appointed in 1998.

Background: Christian principles underpin an education at Durham High School. Girls join from a variety of maintained and independent schools and are encouraged to develop their potential as enthusiastic and independent learners. The curriculum balances arts, sciences, practical and creative subjects. The national curriculum is supplemented by Latin and German, while GCSE candidates can study either the three sciences or a dual award. Choices at A-level include Latin and Greek.Careers guidance receives special attention and girls have individual interviews with a careers co-ordinator while parents are invited to information evenings. School life spills over into weekends and holidays with a busy schedule of non-classroom pursuits. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme, Young Enterprise, community service and charity fundraising are well supported. The school has raised £14,500 for an Aids peer counselling programme, in which pupils will assist. Talent in and appreciation of art, music and drama are nurtured. Groups include a jazz band or chamber choir, and girls take individual tuition in a wide range of instruments or singing. Dramatic productions are staged at the school and at Durham's Gala theatre. Traditional sports are complemented by aerobics, horseriding, karate, rowing and rock climbing, among others. Sporting and cultural trips are organised to areas as diverse as France and Lesotho.

Alumni: Wendy Craig, actor; Wendy Gibson, Sarah Gatenby, newsreaders.

Higher education: 100% (2 Oxford 0 Cambridge).

Special needs: The school's learning support co-ordinator is a dyslexia specialist.
