General information

Background: Founded in 1822, the school's current building opened in 1964. It is situated in the village of Hamsterley, which is a greenbelt area of 'outstanding natural beauty' in a 'very pleasant' rural location. There are 'strong' community links, and the Friends of the School are 'extremely supportive' by fund-raising and helping in the classroom. Some of the funds raised go to charities such as Shelter and the local hospice. Hamsterley is a 'pro-active' school involved in 'many projects', particularly the arts. It also has links with local engineers. Pupils are involved in all local tournaments and were runners-up in the 1999 cross-country and rugby tournaments. The school benefits from coaching in football from Sunderland Football Club, and visits a local school once a fortnight to use its swimming facilities. Basketball and kwik-cricket are also available and all games are mixed at Hamsterley, which is 'very keen to involve girls in all team sports'. At Christmas, the children sing carols around the village and there is an annual dramatic/musical production. Extra-curricular activities include sporting clubs and a weekly games club or computer club. Information and communications technology is the school's current focus and it is currently setting up a cyber-cafe for parents and community members. .
