General information

Background: Sacriston Junior first opened in 1910, and was originally a senior school. The current main building has three classrooms, a library, resources room, hall and small hall, while two classrooms are housed in demountables and two in an island block across the playground which is 'quite small'. There is also a large playing field, a netball court, a garden and 'good views'. The school seeks to provide all pupils with a 'broad, balanced and relevant curriculum suited to their individual needs', and the aim of the curriculum is 'to encourage pupils to become competent self-reliant children with a knowledge of the world about them'. The school also offers a range of extra-curricular activities which include football, athletics, netball, cross-country, drama, sewing, choir and a wildlife garden. Peripatetic music tuition is also offered to those pupils wishing to take up a string instrument. Sports are a 'strength of the school', and at the end of the 1999 season, the girls team came second in the cross country district championships, and the school was the Sacriston Carnival football champion. It has 'strong' community links, and holds an annual charity fund raising event. In 1997 the school was the first in Durham to achieve a Schools in Europe accreditation award, for work and links in Europe. In 1999 the Basic Skills Agency awarded the school a Quality Mark for literacy and numeracy.
