General information
Headteacher: Ian Kendrick, appointed in January 2005.
Staff: 45 (men 16, women 29).
Background: Durston House was founded in 1886 in Castlebar Road, a leafy part of Ealing, and has grown from 135 to nearly 400 boys since 1983. The Educational Trust, launched in 1985, now owns the freehold of the main school, the head's house and bursar's office, junior school and six acres at two prime sites. Boys use the main playground, which is a three-minute walk away, while the main venue for senior games and home matches is 10 minutes away by coach. A major refit of the main school in recent years has almost doubled the available space for library and information technology resources, and provided new up-to-date laboratories. The school has a good sporting record. The under-11 rugby team made the national finals in 2005; under-13 cricket team reached the finals of the Jet Cricket Tournament in 2005. Leavers at 13-plus regularly win awards at leading independent London day schools, including St Paul's and Latymer. Visiting teachers offer a wide range of musical tuition and singing lessons can also be arranged. Pupils can take part in numerous extra-curricular activities each week. Intake into reception class is of mixed ability, while older pupils are required to take straightforward tests in English and mathematics as well as an interview. After-school care, until 6pm. Ethos: 'A friendly and family based school where every pupil is valued.' .
Approach to discipline: 'Discipline is bound to be good where adults and pupils cooperate constructively and use space and time to the full, intelligently and adventurously, for things they want to do really well. For every yellow conduct card, the school awards at least 10 green distinctions.'
Uniform: Grey sweatshirt with logo of black chough with red beak flying in red circle, grey trousers, grey shirt, green/black tie with house stripe, white shirt for special events and black waterproof coat with big pockets. 'The school insists on correct uniform.'
Special needs: Individual pupils withdrawn from class as appropriate.
Inspection: February 2003: 'Durston House School is a good school with many very good features. These features include informed governance, strong leadership and clear direction by the headmaster and senior managers, very good personal guidance and pastoral care. Good and very good teaching, along with the friendly, secure, supportive and well disciplined ethos which permeates lessons, leads to high levels of attainment at the end of each phase of pupils? education. Pupils are prepared extremely well for the next stage of their education. A few areas, such as academic reports to parents and the analysis of assessment information require improving.'
