General information

Headteacher: Anna Evans, appointed in September 2006.

Staff: 28 (men 3, women 25).

Background: Founded in 1890 as Heidelberg College, Harvington is housed in three Victorian buildings, complete with a purpose-built gymnasium and assembly hall, in the leafy suburb of Ealing. There are three playgrounds on site, but all sporting activities, such as swimming, hockey and rounders, take place off site. Specialist classrooms are used for science, computing, art, music and drama and there are two libraries. Girls are taught in classes of no more than 18 and this individual attention allows them to gain excellent results. Drama and French are offered in addition to the national curriculum and a tenth of pupils receive individual music tuition. Girls have the opportunity to take part in a number of sports and extra-curricular clubs after school. Private lessons are also offered in singing, speech and drama. Pupils enthusiastically participate in community, national and international charity events and the school is proud of its local links. High academic standards in supportive environment. The school offers a traditional curriculum and strong discipline within a warm and caring environment.

Approach to discipline: 'The school expects and maintains a very high standard of behaviour from pupils. A code of conduct and school rules set out the expectations but they are enforced in a caring and supportive manner. The overriding principle is one of respect for one another and staff and for the cultures and beliefs of others.'

Uniform: Black and gold, distinctive blazer. Uniform regulations are enforced 'quite strictly'.

Special needs: SENCO provides withdrawal and in class support is largely available for pupils with dyslexia. Pupils with special educational needs are supported by a trained member of staff.

Inspection: March 2004: 'Harvington School is a small school which successfully achieves its aims. The small classes, the good teaching and learning, and the happy, welcoming, supportive atmosphere lead to good academic attainment and progress from pupils with a wide range of abilities and cultural backgrounds. The very good pastoral care and provision for personal development result in very good behaviour and attitudes to learning. However, the procedures for assessing and recording the achievement, progress and needs of pupils are not used consistently in the senior school. Middle management structures require further development.'
