General information
Headteacher: Gabrielle Solti, appointed in September 2003.
Staff: 19 (women 19).
Background: The junior department is an integral part of the whole school, which was founded in 1873. Transfer to the senior school is usual though not automatic. Admitting four-year-olds to two new reception classes from 2007. New science room and refitted design and technology room from September 2007. Good-size classrooms, a library, large halls and specialist rooms for computing, music and technology. The school has recently renovated its playground facilities; attractive outside classroom area includes a well-fenced pond for environmental studies. Highly-qualified staff includes specialists for physical education, music, drama and modern languages. Private support for mathematics or English, at parental expense, may be recommended by the school, and is available on site. The school has a modern ICT network and a dedicated computer room with 25 computers. ICT is a real strength and is used creatively across the curriculum, with interactive whiteboards in every class. Active music department offers opportunities to girls of all abilities, and a large orchestra, recorder ensemble and chamber choir. Individual music lessons are available from peripatetic music staff and there are annual concerts and productions. A varied physical education programme includes games, athletics, gymnastics, dance and swimming throughout the school in the new 25-metre swimming pool. Inter-school sports fixtures are organised on a regular basis. The school is involved in the London Schools Netball Tournament as well as the netball and swimming rallies with other schools from the Girls Day School Trust. Extra-curricular activities include gymnastics, netball, rounders, dance, drama and chess.New after-school Mandarin Chinese club in 2006 for pupils from Year 2, for a small charge. Many charities are supported. Visiting speakers enrich the curriculum, and girls go on a number of trips, including a residential week away in Year 6. 'Within a secure, caring environment the school provides a broad and challenging curriculum designed to equip the girls with a wide range of thinking and learning skills.' Girls are admitted on the basis of their academic potential and ability. After-school care, until 6pm. Over-subscribed, with more than two applications per place. Ethos: 'The school offers an excellent education for girls from Ealing and a wider area of West London. Its pupils are encouraged to work for the highest standards in all that they do, for themselves and for others. It also encourages breadth and depth in all areas, fostering a desire to learn and achieve one?s best for the satisfaction and enjoyment, which comes with it. It fosters happiness in pupil?s lives.' .
Approach to discipline: Staff, parents and children work together to create a happy, caring and learning environment. The children are well-behaved. A climate of responsible self-discipline is encouraged. Each child is different, so individual strategies are drawn up to encourage and reinforce positive behaviour. Children are actively encouraged to seek help when they cannot resolve difficult situations for themselves. The school has an anti-bullying policy, which is shared with parents and daughters.
Uniform: Red/navy skirt/trousers/pinafore, jumper, polo-neck shirt, pinafore for Key Stage 1 children. 'Strictly enforced.'
Special needs: Parents are advised if teachers feel their daughter may have a special need. Where appropriate, additional help can be provided on a one-to-one basis in school at an additional charge..
Inspection: November 2001: 'Notting Hill and Ealing High School is a very good school. Both the senior school and the junior department have many strengths and no significant weaknesses. Through the high standard of its teaching, leadership, management and pastoral care, the school enables its pupils to reach high levels of attainment. It is very successful in its aim to educate the whole person, both in academic study and in a wide variety of other fields. The pupils develop into confident, articulate individuals, possessing independence of thought. By their final year in the senior school, they become assured and well-rounded young women, with constructive attitudes and a concern for others.'
