General information
Headteacher: Susan Whitfield, appointed in September 1991.
Staff: 54 (men 14, women 55).
Background: Founded in Notting Hill in 1873, the school moved to Ealing in 1931. It strives to balance informality with traditional values, and high academic standards with enjoyment of learning. Pupils are benefiting from the completion of a three-year development providing state-of-the-art facilities for sport, music, art and drama. New integrated ICT facilities are used across the curriculum and music technology courses were introduced in September. Also new in 2006 are extracurricular classes in Mandarin Chinese. Girls follow a broad curriculum beyond national guidelines. GCSE students are encouraged to maintain a balance between languages, humanities, practical subjects and science. Pupils also maintain a broad subject range at AS-level, intended to appeal to universities, and go on to study three or four A-levels. There is good careers advice and career planning via an independent organisation. As at all GDST schools, there is access to a database of former pupils willing to provide advice and work experience. Pastoral care caters to the needs of girls from childhood to young adulthood. A nurse is on site full-time and a counsellor can be seen on confidential request. Most girls study a musical instrument and music has a key role in school life. Teams for netball, hockey, rounders, tennis, gymnastics and swimming enjoy busy fixture lists. The school has an indoor swimming pool on site used both for classes and recreational swimming at lunchtime. Last year there was a geography trip to Iceland and art trips to New York and Florence.
Alumni: Dame Angela Rumbold, former Conservative deputy chairman; Kathryn Flett, journalist; Angellica Bell, Konnie Huq, children's television presenters.
Higher education: 100% (4 Oxford 5 Cambridge).
Special needs: Dyslexic pupils receive specialist advice and an education plan; as do gifted children. Various educational issues are assessed. The school works closely with parents and professionals.
Inspection: November 2001: Notting Hill and Ealing High School is a very good school. Both the senior school and the junior department have many strengths and no significant weaknesses. Through the high standard of its teaching, leadership, management and pastoral care, the school enables its pupils to reach high levels of attainment. It is very successful in its aim to educate the whole person, both in academic study and in a wide variety of other fields. The pupils develop into confident, articulate individuals, possessing independence of thought. By their final year in the senior school, they become assured and well-rounded young women, with constructive attitudes and a concern for others.
