General information
Headteacher: Rob Simmons.
Staff: 23 (men 11, women 12).
Background: Founded in 1904 as St Benedict's School, the junior school was separated from the senior department in 1946, when it also came under the control of its own headmaster. Situated in a west London suburb, boys are educated in keeping with the Roman Catholic traditions of the Benedictine monks of Ealing Abbey, who own the school. Although a Roman Catholic school, there are places for baptised Christians. All national curriculum subjects are taught in small classes, and specialist staff are available for science, music, art, information and communications technology, physical education, modern foreign languages and design technology. The existing 'excellent' facilities have been enhanced by the recent completion of a large extension and include a sports hall, 16 acres of playing fields, science, art, ICT and music rooms, a library and an assembly hall. The boys benefit from 'extensive' extra-curricular opportunities in music, drama, sport and a large number of hobbies. The school's main sports are rugby, cricket, swimming and athletics. The 'active' parent's association takes part in the many charity fundraising events held throughout the year. St Benedict?s described his Monastery as a school of the Lord's service, a place where people could come to learn how to live in a proper relationship with God and each other .
Approach to discipline: 'Firm but fair. Interested in the formation of the whole person in keeping with the Benedictine ethos of the school.'
Uniform: Green jumper (green blazer from year 5), charcoal-grey shorts, grey shirt, school tie. 'Strictly enforced.'
Special needs: Limited support for pupils with special educational needs is available. Two dyslexia therapists work on a one-to-one basis with pupils in their own learning support room, which is equipped with a computer and work area. The special educational needs coordinator liases with form teachers and parents in providing support to pupils.
Inspection: April 2003: 'St Benedict?s, Ealing Junior School is a very popular and successful school overwhelmingly for Roman Catholic boys between the ages of 3 and 11. The high incidence of good and very good teaching coupled with the good progress made by so many pupils contributes to the growing reputation that the school enjoys. The support for pupils? spiritual development and the excellent pastoral care are further features that are highly valued by parents of the pupils at the school. These positive developments have been nurtured with great skill and success by the current head, whose leadership is very good. The school is now ready to strengthen various aspects of the curriculum and assessment.'
