General information

Background: In existence for more than 100 years; present building opened in 1967; typical of 1960s architecture, with bright, airy interior; grass and tarmac playing areas. Offers Catholic education to residents of five villages, formerly coal-mining communities; promotes family atmosphere, supporting all aspects of pupils' education. School is pleased with support from parents, both within school curriculum and after school; local police, librarians, parish representatives, health visitors and local football team are all regular visitors to the school. In 1998, won National Heritage Grant (Scotland Area) to 'help develop a more stimulating environment for play and learning'. With help of RSPB, school hopes to create specific learning areas within its garden, linked to Scottish guidelines for environmental studies. 'With a real spirit of partnership, parents, pupils and staff are able to make the school a vibrant, rewarding centre for learning.' .
