Inspection: January 2000: 'The overall quality of attainment was good. It was very good in English. It was only fair in some subjects in S1/S2. In most subjects, there was potential at all stages to improve attainment further. An aspect of learning and teaching affecting overall attainment was the variable pace of progress in different classes. In some subjects, pupils relied too much on the teacher or course book, rather than taking responsibility for their own learning and developing personal confidence. The overall quality of learning and teaching was good. There was evidence of some very good teaching in many departments. Teachers generally gave clear explanations and questioned pupils effectively to develop their understanding. Pupils were well motivated and co-operated well with their teachers. Almost all were making good progress in their learning. Tasks were well designed to help pupils to progress and levels of challenge were generally well matched to pupils? abilities. Overall, the school provided a good quality of education and achieved high levels of success in examinations. It was capable of improving the overall quality of attainment still further. The rector, senior managers and staff demonstrated a clear commitment to further improving the work of the school. They should develop effective teamwork and more systematic monitoring of the quality of learning and teaching in pursuit of this aim.'
