General information

Background: Knox Academy has a medieval foundation as a grammar school with the earliest surviving documentation being the 1379 Exchequer Records. After the 1872 Education (Scotland) Act, the school became a comprehensive and took the name of the most famous son of the burgh whose statue looks down from above the door of the 19th century building. Extension buildings were added in the 1930s and 1960s and the grounds feature playing fields bounded by the Tyne to the south. Extra-curricular activities are encouraged and the school operates a Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and full Cadet Force. Sporting clubs include rugby, hockey, golf, sailing, badminton and swimming. Music is a speciality and the school boasts a full orchestra and large choirs, one of which performs abroad each year. A twinning link was established with Aubigny-sur-Nere 25 years ago and the school makes up to six trips abroad each year, including a geography fieldwork course to the French Alps.
