Background: The Loretto Junior School, founded by Dr Almond in his house at North Esk Lodge in 1891.The School's grounds and buildings extend over fifty hectares on the east side of Musselburgh, alongside the River Esk, the Musselburgh Race Course and the town's historic golf links. Trees, lawns and playing fields and sympathetic architecture are important to the ethos of the School.The Games and Physical Education department at the school is both busy and flourishing. As well as the main sports, children are able to participate in squash, indoor football, tennis, lacrosse, swimming, badminton, athletics, golf, horseriding, gymnastics and squash. .

Inspection: December 2003: 'HM Inspectors identified the following key strengths. The welcoming and supportive school environment and the value placed on all members of the school community. The caring relationships established between and among staff, pupils and parents. The access provided to a mainstream curriculum for pupils from the pupil support base and their inclusion in the activities of their class and school. The strong links established with the parish and with a range of groups in the community. The arrangements to ensure the well-being and safety of pupils, and the encouragement given by staff to pupils? personal and social development.'
