General information

Background: Founded in 1893; occupied current site since 1940; major refurbishment and extension in 1998; another extension completed in 2006. Extensive buildings on edge of small town of North Berwick; surrounded by countryside, with North Berwick Law (prominent landmark and root of a volcano) immediately behind it. Mix of specialist and general room, with excellent equipment. ICT 'a particular strength', with about 250 computers and other ICT resources within completely networked system. Proud of sports facilities: gymnasia and playing fields, including all-weather pitch; school also has use of adjoining sports centre, with swimming pool, games hall and conditioning gym. Offers many sports, including rugby, hockey, netball, badminton; several recent rugby and hockey international players. Other sports such as sailing on individual basis. Broad curriculum, offered to Advanced Higher; S6 students can opt for additional subjects, such as philosophy and economics. Extra-curricular activities: sports, art, chess, debating, public-speaking, languages, Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, World Challenge expeditions, environment group. Music includes variety of orchestras, brass, wood and string bands, and choirs.
