Background: Belmont House School first opened its doors in September 1929, in a private house in Greenhill Avenue, Giffnock. Founder and first headmaster Gerald Arnold Montague Dale and his wife Beryl named the school Belmont, an amalgam of their Christian names Beryl and Montague. The school expanded into six buildings ? the main house for ?day boys?, a bungalow for boarders and other houses for the resident masters and classrooms. Mr Dale acquired ?The Broom? in 1933 ? a mansion house, dating from 1840, and grounds on the Broom Estate, Newton Mearns. The mansion stood in two acres of garden ground and a three-acre plot, a short distance away, was also acquired for playing fields. And so Mr and Mrs Dale began to lay the foundations for Belmont House School. Cloakrooms and changing rooms were installed in the basement and the wooden assembly hall was dismantled, brought up the road from Giffnock and assembled, with additional classrooms, on the North side of the school.A new art block was built in 1991 and Mr Mercer retired in 1998.
