General information

Headteacher: Judy Clark, appointed in January 1998.

Staff: 11 (men 2, women 9).

Background: The school is located on the edge of the town of Bexhill, on the main railway line to Hastings and within easy reach of Gatwick Airport. Accompanied travel to and from London is available at the beginning and end of each term. Established in 1989, the preparatory school occupies an elegant, late-Victorian building within easy reach of the senior school. It offers 'large, light, airy' classrooms, a 'well stocked' library and specialist rooms for art, design and information technology. It has 'pleasant, extensive' grounds with very good sports facilities including six tennis courts, two games fields and two surfaced playgrounds. There is also an indoor heated swimming pool. French, drama and touch typing are taught as part of the curriculum. Pupils enjoy football, hockey, cricket, swimming, netball, tennis, athletics, rounders and badminton. Swimming is particularly strong, with pupils reaching the finals of the national junior championships. Many pupils receive individual instrumental tuition. There are good community links, with the swimming pool and school hall used by local groups and sporting events. There are at least two events each term at which pupils raise funds for charity. All pupils are selected according to academic ability, although most applicants are accepted.

Approach to discipline: 'Firm, friendly discipline with emphasis on guidance and encouragement and close communication with parents.'

Uniform: Boys: dark-grey trousers, polo-shirt (Reception to Year 4), white shirt and tie (Years 5 and 6), burgundy embroidered v-necked jumper, burgundy blazer. Girls: tartan kilt, polo-shirt (Reception to Year 4), white blouse (Years 5 and 6), burgundy embroidered v-necked jumper, burgundy blazer. 'Uniform strictly adhered to.'

Special needs: Three part-time, fully-qualified SEN staff provide one-to-one tuition in a dedicated room for children with a lesser degree of SEN..

Inspection: October 2005: 'In the Prep School, pupils receive a good comprehensive education which includes an emphasis on exercise, fresh air and a healthy diet and helps them to flourish in an unpressured environment. Mostly good teaching, and close individual care and attention, as well as good opportunities for personal development, help pupils to enjoy their time at school, to grow in confidence and to achieve good standards in their work. Day and boarding pupils benefit from this supportive community. Some imbalances in the curriculum limit pupils? learning but the range of extra-curricular activities is wide.'
