General information

Headteacher: S Flutter.

Background: Originally founded in West Sussex by the Northern family, the school moved in 1955 into a large Victorian manor house, set in an area of outstanding natural beauty managed by the National Trust and overlooking the medieval castle of Bodiam. Since then, Bodiam has grown in size and reputation, while still remaining small enough for each teacher to know and care for every child. We pride ourselves on the fact that the caring ethos we show is shown in every activity, and in every class, the children have. The school has been a member of IAPS since 1970 and is accredited by the Independent Schools Joint Council. There are many clubs in which the children can become involved. They play an important role in bringing together pupils and staff, seniors and juniors in an atmosphere of shared enthusiasm. Specialist teaching starts even in the Pre-Preparatory department for French, Music, Gymnastics, Dancing and Swimming. From 8 years of age the children are taught all subjects by specialist staff. This is seen as a particular strength of the school, and one that ensures a high standard of tuition in all areas of the Curriculum. Ballet, Tap and Modern Dance classes are available to all the girls and boys in the school. A policy of enthusiastic practical music-making is encouraged throughout the school. Tuition is available in a wide range of instruments with regular and varied opportunities to perform within the orchestra, chamber groups, ensembles and choir.

Inspection: May 2001: 'The proprietors, headmaster and staff at Bodiam Manor School have worked very hard and successfully to retain the ethos of the school since the change of ownership in the autumn of 1999. The new proprietors and the headmaster have made considerable progress in improving the standard of the accommodation and the facilities. Progress has been less pronounced in the development and management of the curriculum but a good start has been made. The quality of the teaching and learning in the school is generally good to very good and the standards achieved overall are in line with national expectations and sometimes above. The pupils are industrious and courteous. Relationships between all those who make up the school community are very good. The school gives high priority to the welfare of its pupils and to the achievement of its educational aims.'
