General information

Headteacher: Simon Davies, appointed in 2005.

Background: Eastbourne College offers an all-round education that fosters high levels of achievement and participation in all areas of school life. The whole ethos of the school is based on a 24/7 culture, with the majority of staff and their families living on campus in the seaside town of Eastbourne. This medium-sized coeducational day and boarding school has a full curriculum from 8.30am to 8.30pm. Art, drama, design technology and sport are all strong features of the school, which gets good academic results. Last year 96% of pupils went on to higher education, including four to Oxbridge. Each pupil has a personal tutor who monitors academic progress and acts as overseer, encourager and troubleshooter in work-related matters. Boys and girls are offered a huge range of sports from rowing and rugby to dance and yoga. Recent successes include eight county hockey titles last season. All pupils join the Combined Cadet Force in year 10 to develop leadership skills and self-reliance; after that membership is voluntary. The school also runs annual expeditions all over the world. Previous destinations have included Borneo, Mongolia and Bolivia. Sporting teams have toured America, South Africa and New Zealand and there are plenty of other educational trips closer to home. Eastbourne College pupils regularly achieve success outside the classroom. Recently pupils won a regional science and technology award, one had a painting exhibited at the South Bank and three students are due to appear in the next Harry Potter film, The Order of the Phoenix.

Alumni: Sir Hugh Casson, architect; Woodrow Wyatt, politician and journalist; Frederick Soddy, Nobel prizewinner for chemistry, 1921; Eddie Izzard, comedian.

Higher education: 96% (1 Oxford 3 Cambridge).

Special needs: The school has a dedicated special educational needs department and trained staff for mild dyslexia.

Inspection: October 2002: Eastbourne College is a very good school. Boys and girls are happy and proud to be members of it. They achieve very high academic standards in relation to their abilities. They also reach good standards in a wide range of activities. The hard-working members of staff provide very good teaching and high quality care and support for both boarders and day pupils through the strongly house-based system. Relationships between pupils and staff are good and are based on mutual respect. In most respects Eastbourne has succesfully achieved the transition to full coeducation but still lacks a sufficient number of female teachers on the staff, especially in senior posts. Leadership of the school is energetic and enthusiastic and routine administration is good, but more openness is needed in strategic planning. The attractive and well cared for campus contributes to the excellent learning environment. Pupils and staff exude an air of calm purposefulness.
