General information

Background: Originally founded in the late 1860's by the Church of England to provide 'education for the poor of the parish', the school is now a controlled school maintained by the local eduation authority. It retains links with the church, and the governing body includes three foundation governors appointed by the church, while the school's daily act of collective worship is subject to inspection by the diocesan authority. The school has grown 'considerably' since it was built. The hall, kitchen and secretary's office are accommodated in the original Victorian buildings and the school house has been converted to provide a library, staff room, head's office and resource room. New classrooms and toilets were built in the 1950's and a permanent classroom and two prefabs have been added since 1972. A purpose-built reception/Year 1 infant classroom completed in 1985 is the newest part of the main school but, despite the age of some parts, the buildings have been 'very well maintained' and the internal decoration is 'in excellent order'. The school offers a 'good, level' playground in addition to garden areas and a 'large' playing field, all overlooking the 'beautiful, rolling Sussex countryside'. The village pre-school playgroup also has its own building on the school site. The school's most recent 'notable achievement' was being identified during its 1997 Ofsted inspection as one of only three primary schools in East Sussex considered to be 'particularly successful'.
