General information

Background: A rural comprehensive set in 17 acres of grounds inthe Sussex Downs about four miles north east of Lewes. The original school opened in 1958, became a comprehensive in 1976 and opened as a community college in 1988. Accommodation comprises three principal buildings with administration departments, classrooms (including a new teaching block completed in September 1998 to house six classrooms), hall, dining area, swimming pool, art, drama and technology departments and languages department. The college recently gained specialist technology status. It is proud of its reputation in art, music, dance and drama (big band, wind band, training band, orchestra, choirs, rock groups, guitar, recorder and chamber ensembles) and boasts a 'strong tradition' of competitive sport (rugby, football, cricket, netball, hockey, cross-country, stoolball and athletics). There is also an integrated youth service programme. A learning support unit with five full-time and three part-time members of staff provides support for the whole college, and there are 19 part-time support staff in curriculum areas. In 2001 the college won a School Improvement Award recognising its consistent improvement of GCSE results over the last four years. The school aims to 'make a major contribution to the full development of the the individual and to prepare each to lead a useful, satisfying and enjoyable life'.
