General information

Background: St Richard's Catholic College was founded in 1959 as a secondary modern school, and became comprehensive in 1977. The school offers a Christian education to pupils of all abilities within the deaneries of Eastbourne and St Leonards, in the diocese of Arundel and Brighton. The school is housed in modern brick buildings divided into four main blocks, the latest of which opened in 2002 for creative and expressive arts. On average, pupils are entered for 9.7 subjects at GCSE level, which is the highest average entry in the county. In addition to the core subjects, every pupil studies modern foreign language, a humanity, a technology and a creative arts subject. In 1999, the school achieved the Education Extra award certificate of distinction for its scheme of after-school activities. Clubs include a wide choice of sports (assisted by professional coaches), dance, choir, guitar, orchestra, drama, theatre visits, art, technology, IT, computer, library, chess, the levellers' club, astronomy, the young debrouillards, and the school council. The young engineers' club reached national finals in 1999. The school is a member of East Sussex Council's eco-schools scheme, with projects including litter, energy-saving, and the building of a pond in the school grounds. The school is commited to raising money for local and national charities, while pupils are involved with music and drama within the community. Specialist science college status. Over-subscribed, with 1.4 applications per place. Beacon status; Sportsmark; Investor in People status; Leading Edge status (2004).
