General information

Headteacher: Hilary Johnson, appointed in September 1996.

Staff: 20 (men 2, women 18).

Background: Hull Collegiate School has been established as the result of a merger between two of Hull?s top independent schools, Hull High School and Hull Grammar School. Situated four miles to the west of Hull and one mile north east of the Humber Bridge, the school is based at Tranby Croft, a beautiful country house which benefits from five hectares of mature landscaped grounds. The Preparatory School is housed in a purpose-built facility on the same site and was opened in 2004. The Senior Schools joined forces in September 2005, completing the multi-million pound investment by parent company United Church Schools Trust. This has provided state-of-the-art facilities including: new science laboratories, classrooms and workshops. Astro-turf and additional playing fields. A relaxed café style refectory. Open plan art school. Sports hall built to Sport England standard. Additional purpose built Drama and Music facilities feature in a second phase of development. Learning is also enhanced by access to interactive whiteboards in classrooms, which harness the excitement of multi-media presentations.A wide range of sports is offered including judo, swimming, basketball and rugby. The school raised over £3000 for Mencap, £1000 for RNLI and £4500 for the Tsunami disaster fund - linked with schools in Sri Lanka. Pupils organise own fundraising events. This is a caring and friendly school that strives to develop the whole child. It celebrates all achievements and aims for excellence in all areas of school life. Rural setting, close to Humber Bridge. Extensive attractive grounds offering recreational educational facilities of a very high standard. Pond, woods, wildlife area on-site. Purpose-built classrooms, state-of-the-art ICT suite and science laboratories and art room. Setting for mathematics and English from reception, subject specialist teaching in Year 5/Year 6. Merger means the school will be fully co-educational from two-and-half years to 11 years. In 2005 the senior school will also become co-educational.

Approach to discipline: The school has a firm and caring attitude and it believes in very few rules. It encourages self-discipline.

Plain dark navy outdoor coat navy/maroon school scarf.

Special needs: The school has a dyslexia trained junior teacher, full-time special educational needs coordinator and a teacher for English as a foreign language.

Inspection: September 2006: 'Hull Collegiate School, both Hull Prep and Hull Senior Schools, has succeeded in establishing itself in a remarkably short time, considering the painful process of merger and the uncertainties for pupils, parents and staff. The prep and senior schools are already attractive and sociable communities of pupils and staff, as they aim to be. Hull Collegiate has established close and effective academic and pastoral links between the prep and senior schools. The provision in the foundation stage remains as good as it was in the recent Ofsted inspection. The school has, despite the difficulties of the past three years, established a secure platform from which its intellectual life can grow, with good standards in the prep school after two years and satisfactory, often good standards in the senior school after one year. Already the school is fulfilling its aim to give pupils individual attention and sympathetic pastoral support. It goes a long way to meeting its higher aspiration to find the best in everyone, but does not yet fully meet it because too much of the teaching leaves insufficient opportunity for pupils to reflect and explore. The pupils and staff, now enthusiastic about the newly merged school, are ready to move forward and improve from this promising base. The school complies with almost all of the regulatory requirements, but does not at present meet standard three (Welfare, Health and Safety of Pupils).'
