General information

Background: Six-year comprehensive located in Bruntsfield and Viewforth area of Edinburgh. Housed in listed five-storey building dating from beginning of 20th century; drama taught in converted church two minutes from main building. Strong tradition of rugby and hockey; football also popular; no playing fields on site, so pupils use local authority facilities a mile away. Large selection of extra-curricular activities includes badminton, basketball, cross-country, sailing, chess, computing, Christian Union, debating, Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, Young Enterprise, and gymnastics. Music department coordinates choir, orchestra, wind band, guitar ensembles and swing band. Activity week at end of summer term for all pupils; German and French exchange; S2 ski trip to USA; senior rugby tour to Canada every two years. S6 prefects organise fundraising for selected charities each year. Student council meets every fortnight to discuss year-group and whole-school issues; active links with parents through school board; parent-teacher association and parent's forum. Ethos: 'Very positive. We emphasise working together in an atmosphere of cooperation and trust. We want pupils to do the best they can do and enjoy coming to Boroughmuir High School.' .
