Background: Cargilfield is a small, friendly Prep school for boys and girls from the age of 3 to 13 years. It is situated on the outskirts of Edinburgh by the lovely village of Cramond and near Edinburgh airport, with easy access also over the Forth Road Bridge. 215 children are educated at Scotland's first and oldest Prep School, which was founded in 1873.Cargilfield has outstanding facilities for a small school. The upper school is a modern prep school for 8 to 13 year olds. It combines traditional facilities like the chapel, dining hall, and extensive playing fields with the design and technology centre, new computer suite, all-weather pitches and the modern sports hall with climbing wall.The pre-prep and nursery for 3 to 8 year olds is an impressive modern building. The nursery overlooks landscaped gardens, and there are south-facing classrooms, a state-of-the-art computer suite, and multi-purpose hall leading to an open-air theatre. .

Inspection: October 2002: The quality of education provided by the school was good in some aspects, but fair overall. The school provided a caring and friendly environment where pupils had access to a wide range of sports and extra-curricular activities. However, learning and teaching needed to be improved. The headmaster showed a clear commitment to improving the effectiveness of the school?s provision. There were signs of recent improvements in areas of the curriculum and in the overall good quality of provision for pupils in the pre-prep and nursery. The school should aim to raise pupils? attainment by having higher expectations and by providing more consistently good classroom experiences for all pupils.
