General information
Headteacher: Rod Grant, appointed in August 2005.
Staff: 15 (men 3, women 12).
Background: Founded in 1930 when joint owner-headmasters, former Merchiston Castle teachers, Richard Killick and Robert Ainslie, admitted the first four boy boarders. Although the economic depression made early growth difficult, by the time Captain Ainslie left to find Blairmore School in Aberdeenshire in 1937, the roll had grown to 43. Rugby, cricket and Latin featured heavily in the curriculum and the school's reputation grew through sporting and academic success. New rooms and facilities were added after the war and more staff were taken on. George Mathewson, a teacher, developed the school further between 1962 and 1984, adding a pool, games hall and laboratory. In 1964 the school became a limited company governed by a board of governors and girl boarders and day children were introduced. Clifton Hall is a happy, safe and confident school. It is fundamentally founded in the belief that learning should be enjoyable and that teaching should be dynamic.
