General information

Headteacher: Michael Spens, appointed in 1998.

Staff: 85 (men 50, women 35).

Background: Fully coeducational since 1981, the school is located on a spectacular 100-acre site in Edinburgh. Plans are afoot to add a new house for sixth-form boarders, as well as new facilities for the creative arts. All pupils study GCSEs and have the option of taking either A-levels or Scottish highers. The International Baccalaureate is to be introduced in 2006. A broad curriculum features options in Russian, Italian, Chinese and Japanese as well as politics. As about 30% of pupils are from overseas, English as a foreign language courses are offered. Pupils are not selected on academic ability alone and examination results reflect good ?value added?. This year saw 35% of all GCSE entries gaining A* grades while the 97% pass rate was the best in Fettes?s history. Every pupil has a weekly tutorial to discuss their progress as well as lessons in careers and study skills. Art, music and drama are particular strengths. The school has a virtual gallery on its website to showcase pupils? work and its actors have been a regular presence on the Edinburgh Fringe for 14 years. Membership of the CCF is compulsory in the early years with many opting for leadership training in the sixth form. A Monday afternoon activity programme allows pupils to explore anything from creative crafts to cult films and the Duke of Edinburgh scheme flourishes. Fettesians have represented their country in rugby, lacrosse and hockey.
