General information
Headteacher: Michael Spens, appointed in 1998.
Staff: 85 (men 50, women 35).
Background: Fully coeducational since 1981, the school is located on a spectacular 100-acre site in Edinburgh. Plans are afoot to add a new house for sixth-form boarders, as well as new facilities for the creative arts. All pupils study GCSEs and have the option of taking either A-levels or Scottish highers. The International Baccalaureate is to be introduced in 2006. A broad curriculum features options in Russian, Italian, Chinese and Japanese as well as politics. As about 30% of pupils are from overseas, English as a foreign language courses are offered.
