General information
Headteacher: Alistair Hector, appointed in 1998.
Staff: 127 (men 53, women 74).
Background: The school, founded in 1628, has a unique setting in Edinburgh with the castle as a backdrop. As well as the imposing Old Building, a fine example of Scottish renaissance architecture, the school has a purpose-built science block, one of the first in Scotland, an IT resource centre, as well as extensive sporting facilities and a boathouse on the canal. A non-denominational school, George Herriot?s seeks to provide an education that encourages positive attitudes, a striving for excellence and a lasting appreciation for learning. Initially, the school provides a broad common curriculum, with pupils set by ability in English, mathematics and modern languages. It follows the Scottish examination system, generally presenting pupils in eight subjects at Standard grade and five at Higher grade. An extensive range of subject options includes business studies and Latin. For pupils in S4 and S5 there is a programme of work experience and voluntary service. The emphasis in sport is on participation, allowing pupils to find an activity at which they can prosper. Music and drama have important roles in the life of the school, which boasts a huge range of groups including a full symphony orchestra, several choirs, concert band, jazz band, a flute ensemble and a pipe band. Building on staff enthusiasm drama at the school is lively, colourful and engaging. Recent productions include The Wind in the Willows, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, Trial by Jury and Crazy for You.
