Background: George Heriot's School has a unique place in the history of Edinburgh and in Scottish education. Its foundation in the third decade of the Seventeenth Century expanded the intellectual and charitable boundaries of the City and became a forerunner for many similar schools throughout the country.At George Heriot?s School staffs believe that a major contribution to the personal and social development of their pupils is made by their participation in extra-curricular activities. A rich selection of activities is available for all pupils to enjoy and participation is strongly encouraged. Staffs contribute their skills and enthusiasms to provide these activities, which include a wide range of hobbies, physical activities, cultural activities and outdoor pursuits.The Army and Royal Air Force are represented by separate sections of the Combined Cadet Force and there is a strong and very accomplished Pipe Band. Activities available to cadets include ceremonial drill, outdoor pursuits, air-experience flying, target shooting and courses at military establishments. The CCF is a youth organisation sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. It does not exist as a vehicle for recruitment to the Armed Services. Participation is entirely voluntary. .
