General information

Headteacher: Christine Edmundson, appointed in January 1989.

Staff: 45 (men 5, women 40).

Background: Founded in 1905; buildings are a mix of old and new, due to six building phases in the recent years, which have provided the school with new science laboratories, a theatre and gym, design and technology workshop and computer suite, in addition to new preparatory department classrooms and dining hall. Nearby property purchased to convert into separate academic nursery for children aged three and four. Substantial programme of ICT development. The lower school curriculum includes English, mathematics, science, design and technology, humanities, French, information technology, physical education, games, swimming, life skills, music, drama. All pupils take part in at least one musical each year and there is also the opportunity to become involved in concerts and recitals. Lower school has recently expanded the rnage of curricular activities avaialable at lunchtime and after school: gym club, netball, science clubs, board games society, ballet, speech and drama, computer club, orchestra, choir, various musical ensembles and craft club. Holiday courses are also run in drama, art and craft and the school benefits from strong links with a performing arts academy. Visits to London theatres, museums and other places of interest form an integral part of the school calendar. Each form chooses a charity to sponsor each term and is responsible for arranging their own fund-raising events.

Approach to discipline: 'Pupils are expected to embrace the school's motto "By love, serve one another". This is central to our code of discipline where one must treat others as one would wish to be treated. Loyalty to the school and its values is expected from parents and pupils. Conduct and misconduct marks are awarded and the pupils are put in houses for this purpose.'

Uniform: Winter: Green shirt, green pinafore, pink and green striped tie and scarf, green blazer with school crest and pink piping, green outer coat. Summer: Pink checked dress, green cardigan with pink stripe, straw boater with pink and green band, green blazer with school crest and pink piping.

Special needs: Special educational needs coordinator oversees initial diagnostic screening, when necessary. Specific provision for pupils with speech and language disorders, emotional behavioural difficulties, Asperger's Syndrome, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, and epilepsy.

Inspection: September 2005: 'Palmers Green High School successfully creates an ethos true to its motto 'By Love, Serve One Another' so that the supportive and harmonious multicultural community within the school provides excellent personal development for its pupils. Very high standards are achieved in public examinations at all levels because teaching, in almost all subjects, is very good, and pupils? attitudes to learning are excellent. The governing body provides outstanding support and involvement with the school, promoting very good relationships which are highly conducive to teaching and learning.'
