Background: At Palmers Green High School, seven building phases have provided for the re-building and extension of the school?s major facilities during the past eight years. These modern facilities include a new preparatory department, computer technology and science laboratories, a performing arts suite, a library, pottery and photography areas and a new administrative block. A new sports hall and theatre as well as new catering facilities have also been completed. The games facilities cover a wide range of sport from hockey to golf, canoeing to ice-skating. Outward-bound courses are organised on a regular basis and this wide range of sporting activities forms the basis for the study of a GCSE in physical education at the age of 14, and the Bronze Awards of the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme.Children are familiarised with computers from the preparatory department upwards, with all pupils taking the RSA computer literacy and information technology certificate by the age of 14. Educational visits to take advantage of the facilities of London in particular are considered important and are often arranged. The performing arts are encouraged in the school and each term sees a large number of pupils taking part in plays, musicals and concerts.Careers education is an integral part of the timetabled curriculum from 11-16 and all pupils participate in careers lectures, exhibitions and work experience placements. Pupils are prepared for up to 10 GCSE subjects, with a view to continuing their studies to A-level and beyond.
