General information

Background: Originally conceived in February 1967, the school was opened in Ingatestone in September 1973 to provide a comprehensive education for a wide area of Essex. The school is over-subscribed, with nearly three applications per place, and many pupils travel up to 50 miles to school including those from Central London. It has 30 partner schools. The International Baccalaureate (IB) is offered as an alternative to A-level for students and about one half of sixth-formers follow the IB course. With 16 language teachers, more than 30 languages are represented in the school and seven languages are taught: German, French, Russian, Spanish, Japanese Chinese, and English as a foreign language. Other languages are supported and examined. All pupils study a minimum of two languages and can do work-experience elsewhere in Europe. The creative arts department offers a varied and interesting programme, which is supported by a range of extra-curricular activities. Sport thrives in the school and can be studied at both GCSE and A-level. Clubs are well attended at lunchtime and after-school and local leagues are entered in basketball, cricket, football, netball and hockey. Computers play an important role in the learning process at the school. The school's computer club allows students to use the network to enrich their learning. There is a range of visits to, and exchanges with, Belgium, France, Germany, Austria, Russia and Denmark. The Anglo European was one of the first two schools to achieve specialist language college status, in 1995, and was awarded the DTI National Languages for Export Award in 1996. Beacon status. Ethos: 'Values-driven, based on the quality of student-to-student and student-to-teacher relationships.' .
