General information
Headteacher: Clare Naismith, appointed in September 1990.
Staff: 21 (women 21).
Background: Braeside was founded in 1944 and is 'housed in two large Victorian houses and surrounded by spacious wooded grounds'. The school is near main bus and underground lines to central London and close to Epping Forest. Braeside follows the national curriculum but also emphasises extra curricular activities. Friends of Braeside (Fobs), a charitable organisation set up by the school, holds regular fundraising events for charity. Braeside school aims to take full account of each girl?s capabilities and interests, to give each girl a sound moral and intellectual foundation for life, to encourage a sense of responsibility and confidence, to offer the potential to complete all eleven years of compulsory schooling within one organization, to create a secure and stable atmosphere and to set high standards in academic achievement and behaviour.
Approach to discipline: 'Mutual cooperation and consideration is encouraged. Behaviour is closely monitored and any problems dealt with promptly.'.
Uniform: Blue, brown and white tartan kilt or tunic, white blouse, brown blazer and sweater, blue brown and white stripe tie. 'Very strictly' enforced..
Inspection: June 2001: 'Braeside has a very good junior school and a senior school which has significant strengths. In both sections of the school, standards of achievement and progress are high in relation to the wide ability range of the pupils. In two-thirds of the lessons observed, the quality of the teaching was good or very good and in the remainder it was satisfactory in all but a few lessons. The teachers are strongly committed to the pupils? education, pastoral care and welfare. The provision for pupils? personal development is of high quality. The school needs to prepare a whole-school development plan that sets out a programme of curriculum, teaching and management development, broaden the range of extra-curricular activities and introduce an appraisal process for the staff.'
Girls' age range: 3 to 16.
After-school care: 15.15-16.30.
