General information

Background: Situated in the pleasant Shenfield Common area of Brentwood, the school was founded as a girls' grammar school in 1913 and became a mixed comprehensive in 1972, before achieving grant-maintained status in 1994. It is housed in a charming 1926 redbrick building, to which an adjoining modern block was added in the early 1970s. This was followed by substantial building in 1995 to provide more science laboratories and general classrooms. The art department is listed in a study of the 15 best art departments in England and Wales. French, German and Spanish are offered to A-level and all students study two languages to at least the end of Year 9. The school provides a hard-working, caring environment, particularly strong and flourishing sixth-form involved in all activities of the school community. The school aims to provide a secure and disciplined environment, where students are encouraged to learn and develop self-respect in an atmosphere of support and enjoyment.
