The school has one of the largest classics departments in the country, offering Latin, Greek and classical civilisation. Founded in 1557, Brentwood is one of the few coeducational independents to teach boys and girls separately until they reach the sixth form. The senior school is divided into five sections to allow close pastoral supervision. Twenty-eight A-level courses are on offer. About 40% continue maths into the sixth form, while psychology is increasingly popular at A-level. All pupils also have one drama lesson a week to help develop self-confidence and interpersonal skills, while three large theatrical productions are staged each year, and there is a purpose-built music facility with ensembles at all levels. Excellent sports facilities have earned a Sportsmark Gold award. The school has seven badminton courts, a sports hall, a floodlit all-weather pitch, four squash courts, two fencing salles, a rifle range, two rugby pitches, seven football pitches and a 25m heated indoor pool. Achievements include national success at football, tennis, cricket and fencing, and a sixth-form fencer won the first British gold medal at international level since 1976.
