General information
Background: Founded in 1907 in residential North Chelmsford on pleasant, open site with sports fields and all-weather hockey pitch to rear; draws students from well beyond town. Mixture of old and new accommodation. Excellent recently-added facilities include new science block, dance/drama studio, all-weather artificial pitch, and sixth-form common room. Computer provision throughout is good, with increasing number of interactive whiteboards. New music centre being built to provide teaching, rehearsal, recording and performance areas. Performs outstandingly well at examination level and has strongly academic curriculum. All students study three separate sciences to GCSE, French and German at Years 7 to 9, and Latin in Years 8 and 9. Sports are 'very strong'; music also 'strong', with two orchestras, wind band, swing band, junior and senior choirs, various small ensemble groups. 'The school's ethos is excellent. It is palpable! The school provides challenge, combined with support, and encourages confidence, hard work and independence of mind.' Strong extra-curricular provision, with students encouraged to take responsibility through running their own charity; also house and extra-curricular events. Combined specialist technology college, music college, and language college status; one of only 10 schools to have been awarded three specialisms. Over-subscribed, with nearly five applications per place. Sportsmark Gold (2005); DfES achievement award (2000, 2001, 2002). Ethos: 'The school aims to provide an environment which is supportive but challenging and which fosters integrity, confidence and self-esteem, independence of thought, creativity, flexibility, compassion, respect for others and a love of learning for its own sake.' .
