General information
Headteacher: J Gwinn, appointed in September 2004.
Staff: 62 (men 45, women 17).
Background: The Alma Mater of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, Chigwell has been a centre of learning since its foundation in 1629 by Samuel Harsnett, a baker's son who became Archbishop of York and vice-chancellor of Cambridge. The school stands in a superb green belt location in 70-acres of playing fields and woodlands, midway between Epping and Hainault Forests 10 miles from central London. The M25 and M11 are close by, while Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports are all within an hour from the school. Today the original building houses the senior school library. Refurbishments over the past 20 years have modernised facilities while 'fully respecting' architectural character and new buildings have been designed to 'blend in with the original buildings which form the nucleus of the school. Junior classrooms, a junior school library and a sports hall have been added in addition to centre for art, design, Information Technology and economics. The school has a heated outdoor swimming pool and it offers an extensive programme of extra-curricular activities. Junior school pupils are in the care of the Head of the junior school. The school encourages in all Chigwellians the qualities of honesty and integrity, a love of learning for its own sake, a lively curiosity about the mystery of the world in which they find themselves, and a feeling for the importance of all living things, themselves included. The School seeks to balance an honest search for personal spiritual truth with active engagement in the discoveries of others.
Approach to discipline: The school works to a minimum of written regulations. In general, all members of the school staff and students are expected to exercise honesty, respect, courtesy and responsibility in their dealings with others. Any person who breaks the law of the land may be deemed to be in breach of the school's code..
Uniform: Boys: regulation grey shorts/trousers, white shirt and grey pullover. Girls: regulation patterned navy and white skirt/pinafore, white blouse and navy pullover. All pupils wear navy blazer incorporating the school emblem (a mitre) and appropriately coloured house tie. Junior school pupils are all expected to adhere to the uniform.
Inspection: May 2004: 'Chigwell Junior School provides very good all-round education and prepares pupils well for the senior school. It is a happy school with a purposeful and lively atmosphere. Many pupils achieve good academic standards but the school needs to provide better support for those with learning difficulties. Pupils are very ready to respond in lessons and their personal, moral and spiritual development is very good. The majority of parents are pleased with many aspects of the school. The grounds and many of the buildings it shares with the senior school are an outstanding feature and are well used.?.
