General information
Headteacher: David Gibbs, appointed in 2006.
Background: A community in which children can grow, Chigwell School offers a balanced education in a stable, traditional environment with varied extracurricular activities. Set in more than 70 acres, the school is just 10 miles from central London. It has an Anglican foundation yet all the principal faiths are represented on the roll. Chigwell aims to encourage a love of learning, logical thinking, good communication skills and study habits. The pace of work is challenging but teachers are always willing to give individual support. Most sixth-formers study four AS subjects, specialising in three in their final year. They also benefit from a skills and activities scheme in which they experience voluntary service, art courses, sailing or study the history of film. The boarding community is based in small houses where pupils live with staff and their families. All pupils have drama lessons, used to explore issues, build confidence and develop public speaking skills. There are regular productions, theatre trips to London, drama clubs and Lamda speech classes. More than 300 music lessons are given each week and children perform in orchestras, choirs and jazz, rock and pop bands. A practical arts centre has a workshop for ceramics and sculpture as well as a photography darkroom. Work is regularly exhibited and there are regular trips to art galleries in London. Chigwell enjoys a national reputation in football, cricket and girls' hockey, but also teaches individual sports to encourage an active, healthy lifestyle.
Alumni: William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania.
Higher education: 99% (6 Oxford 3 Cambridge).
Inspection: May 2004: Chigwell contributes very well to the personal development of the pupils, not least through very good pastoral care. The spiritual development of the pupils within this multicultural community is notable and this contributes to very good relationships between pupils and teachers. Staff are hard-working, caring and committed and their teaching is good, not least because of the preparation and enthusiasm evident in the lessons.
Feeder schools: Loyola Prep; Avon House; Oaklands; Chigwell County Primary; Woodford Green Prep.

Girls' age range: 13 to 18.
