General information
Headteacher: D E Wood.
Background: The school was founded in 1882 as a 'most desirable establishment for young ladies'.Music has always played an important part in the schools life. The school has a large choir as well as an orchestra, which practises weekly and gives several annual performances. The sound of music does truly resound through our school, from the triumphant trumpet to the euphonic euphonium! Drama is also centre stage, with ambitious productions which are always entertaining and involve large numbers of pupils not only acting but also helping with costumes, make-up, scenery, sound and lighting. The school participates in a number of sports against other schools, at local, district, regional and national levels, with a great deal of success. The curriculum encompasses over 15 activities, with four annual major events, the cross Country, swimming and athletics championships, and a golf tournament. There are also competitions where pupils compete for their house in football, hockey, rugby, basketball, volleyball, badminton, cricket, tennis and table tennis. .
Inspection: May 2000: 'Colchester High School has many strong features, notably the high quality of the teaching, the effective pastoral care of its pupils, the outstanding sporting achievements and the very positive ethos. It has no serious weaknesses but needs to review the length of the school week, increase the time devoted to the arts and improve subject co-ordination in the junior school.'
Boys' age range: 2 to 16.
Girls' age range: 2 to 11.
