General information
Background: Colchester Royal Grammar School is descended from a town school founded in 1206, and was granted royal charters by Henry VIII in 1539 and Elizabeth I in 1584. It became a foundation school in 1999. The school is located in a residential area, with gardens, playing fields, and a swimming pool. There are extensive grounds, with tennis courts within walking distance. There is a school hall with a pipe organ, a fine library. A new classroom block for history and classics opened in 2000, a new music and drama centre opened in 2002, and a new art block opened in 2003. The school's catchment area is countywide, and pupils also come from neighbouring Suffolk. Students have the opportunity to study two modern foreign languages. Sports include rugby, cricket, hockey, netball, football, tennis, athletics, basketball, badminton, squash and table-tennis. Music provision includes orchestras, choirs, ensembles and jazz. Other extra-curricular activities include chess, Christian Focus, debating, bridge, public-speaking, community service, trips, visits, exchanges and the Worldwise and Schools' Challenge quizzes. The school is involved in the Engineering Education Scheme and Young Enterprise. Small boarding section (30) for sixth-form boys. Strong links with Europe and Southeast Asia. Specialist science college status. Over-subscribed, with nearly five applications per place. DfES achievement award (2002). Ethos: 'To help each student achieve the greatest all-round development and success of which he or she is capable, and to promote his or her academic, personal, social, moral and spiritual development.' .
