General information
Background: Greensward College was built in 1960 with extra teaching blocks added in 1967, 1997, 1998 and 2000. It was the first state secondary school to move to a five-term year. The school offers facilities such as a heated indoor pool, gymnasia, sports hall, dance studio and fitness centre. The school organises educational visits to Europe and USA. The school provides a wide range of extra-curricular activities and it encourages all students to take advantage of these excellent opportunities. These activities include: basketball, rugby, soccer, netball, cricket, athletics and badminton. The school has developed links with community groups and local industries. Having gained Technology College Status in 1995 and Teacher Training Status in 2001, the school was awarded a second specialism as a vocational school in January 2006. The school has an innovative curriculum including building, hairdressing, media, and film studies, painting and decorating, to match the needs of the students as well as delivering the conventional curriculum of GCSE and A Levels. The school has been awarded Investor in People Status and Charter Mark in 2006. Greensward College aspires to achieve its aim by: developing the individual talents of all students to their fullest potential, enabling them to gain the best results and qualifications of which they are capable; engendering a sense of personal worth and physical well-being, enabling students to become self-confident, self-reliant, self-disciplined and responsible, in an environment that offers support, guidance and counselling as necessary; creating an enjoyable, lively and creative process of teaching and learning; promoting high standards of behaviour, good personal relationships and a respect for the individual whatever his or her age, abilities, race, background or creed; providing an environment in which all staff experience a sense of professional well-being and are willing to give of their best; fostering the partnership between students, staff, parents, governors and the wider community.
