General information
Background: Founded in 1551, the school has been on the current site since 1892, a quarter of a mile from cathedral, with which it has choral link. The school is situated in the centre of Chelmsford. Behind the impressive Victorian frontage, containing library and administrative area, are substantial additional buildings from 1937 and 1963; new art and technology block; large music school, with concert hall and recording studio; further 12-classroom block, including learning development centre, completed in 2003. Facilities include a 30-acre playing fields and pavilion in nearby village of Broomfield. All subjects have specialist rooms; other facilities include two gymnasia, multi-gym, four computer rooms networked around school, drama studio, spacious hall and stage, and seven newly-renovated laboratories. Sports offered: soccer, rugby, hockey, basketball, cross-country, athletics and cricket. Two orchestras, wind band, choir and instrumental ensembles. Seven concerts a year and musical exchange with Max Planck Gymnasium, Schorndorf; three high-quality drama productions, one of which toured Australia in 2002. Combined Cadet Force, with Corps of Drums; Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme; Fleur de Lys Debating and Charity Society; Sports Leadership Award; teacher exchange with link school in South Africa. Challenge expeditions to Himalayas, Peru, Tanzania and Bolivia. Chess, bridge, scientific, mathematical and quiz teams have achieved success in regional and national competitions; school also represents UK in Club 92, school link across the European Union. Many societies, including history, politics, philosophy and Christian Union. Specialist science college status. Over-subscribed, with more than four applications per place. Sportsmark (1999); DfES achievement award (2002, 2003); Leading Edge status (2003, 2005).
