General information
Background: The school opened in 1963 as a purpose-built local comprehensive serving the expanding Lexden area. It is oversubscribed and, on average, two pupils apply for every available place in year 7. The current headteacher is only the third to have taken office at the school, which holds Beacon status, was a first cohort Technology College, and has received two Charter Marks and two Investors in People awards. The school has excellent sporting facilities in 35 acres of grounds and holds the Sportsmark award with distinction and Quality Mark for work with pupils with learning difficulties. The school has a hearing-impaired unit and is currently expanding this facility. In 2000 Philip Morant was awarded the Schools Curriculum Award and in 2001 gained a DfES achievment award. The school aims to be 'a world class school at the heart of the community, providing the highest quality education and care'.
