General information

Background: In 1846, the school was founded as the first Catholic school in Brentwood after the Reformation. St Helen's serves the Catholic parishes of Brentwood and Warley, and part of Ongar and Ingatestone. Its present building dates from 1973 and has 14 rooms consisting of 12 classrooms, a computer room, a library and one demountable. The dual-purpose hall is used for assemblies and school meals, and is 'well equipped' for physical education. Other facilities include a heated, covered swimming pool and adjacent playing fields. 'Countless' awards have been won by children for swimming and they have competed in Eastern Counties and National Championships in Ipswich and Sheffield. National level competition has also been reached in netball. Extra-curricular activities include netball, football, swimming, cross-country, tennis, basketball, skiing, athletics and rounders. The choir has sung at the Barbican Festival for Grant Maintained Schools on several occasions.
