General information
Background: Opened in 1938, originally as two segregated schools. The school is on a 17 acre site of archealogical interest, which is relevant to the town's Roman history. The original school buildings remain, but have been added to over the years increasing its capacity to 920. In 1991 a sports hall and technology rooms were built. The school became Grant Maintained in 1993. Academic strengths include an 'outstanding creative arts faculty', which also provides for extra curricular activity. Pupils are encouraged to work with and for the community. This approach helped the school attain a Schools Curriculum Award in 1992. Through the schools ethos of being 'friendly, purposeful, well organised, well presented' there is a positive trend in results for both GCSE's and Key Stage 3. St Helena students go on to the Colchester Sixth Form College.
