General information

Background: St Martins is located on a 30-acre site in an area beyond the centre of Brentwood, which is primarily greenbelt. Separate girls and boys schools were first established in this delightful setting in 1958 and the two schools combined in 1971 to form the present co-educational comprehensive school. The school is a DfES designated Technology College, a national Beacon School of Excellence and a foundation school. 11 years ago, the school buildings were significantly upgraded and extended at a cost £2 million. In September 2001, his royal highness The Duke of York opened another £4.5 million extension and upgrade. This includes the Arts Centre (10 studios), science laboratories, electronics and graphics workshops, five ICT rooms, libraries, food technology room and girls? physical education changing rooms. The most recent building project involved the creation of a sixth form centre (2003) and new history classrooms (2004). Drama music and art play an important role at St Martin?s. The school offers a wide range of activities, which vary from year to year according to pupils? interest. Regular activities include bridge, chess, Christian union, French conversation, computer clubs, maths club, video club, public speaking, stage lighting and school magazine. Educational and recreational visits include science field trips, a history trip to Rochester, art and geography trips. Visits are regularly organised to theatres, art galleries and exhibitions. There are annual exchange visits to Germany and France. Recreational visits in school holidays include: skiing, water sports, adventure activities, trips to Prague, New York and a Mediterranean cruise. The school aims to provide a happy and caring atmosphere where traditional standards are valued.
