General information
Background: Shieldhall Primary School is located in Shieldhall braes overlooking Falkirk and Grangemouth with views across the River Forth and Ochil Hills. The school has a nursery and 11 classes in the primary section, offering a broad and balanced curriculum based on the five areas outlined by the National 5-14 Guidelines. The school also uses belleplates, handbells and handchimes to enhance the music provision in the school with all classes, and this has generated interest from other schools. Bell ringing is also offered as an extra-curricular activity, in addition to badminton, Scottish country dancing, football, school newspaper group, indoor bowling, recorder group and scripture union. The school takes a keen interest in environmental issues and these are linked to the environmental studies curriculum. Pupils also take part in the Oxford Reading Tree, a scheme published by the Oxford University Press, which makes use of the Scholastic Reading Centres. In addition to bell ringing, the Nelson Music scheme is followed by all classes, and specialist music teachers visit the school. Sports coaching is also provided. The school gives pupils the opportunity to use computers and the internet, and children are encouraged to write e-mails to pen friends in schools around the world. .
