General information
Background: The school became comprehensive in 1967 and was redesignated as a community school in 1999. Its origins date back through Hawarden Grammar School to its foundation in 1606. It is located six miles from Chester and 12 miles from Wrexham, and serves a highly Anglicised, mainly residential border area north of Flintshire. The LEA has made a major investment in the school, and in March 1998 her Majesty the Queen formally opened new facilities in humanities, information technology, languages, media and English, as well as a library, gym, climbing wall, floodlit all-weather pitch, drama studio, school hall, careers suite, sixth form centre, dining hall and admin area. In 1995 the school gained a £250000 Technology School Initiative Award from the government and a major grant from Sportlot to part fund the all-weather pitch. In 1990 it won the Schools Curriculum Award and the Environmental Enterprise Award. Hawarden High School is committed to develop the maximum potential of all its pupils, both as individuals and as responsible members of the community, and to prepare them for a lifetime of learning by maintaining a safe and orderly environment.
